What is Copyright?

Copyright law is an area of the law that was created to protect forms of expression that are fixed in a tangible medium. The tangible medium can be a canvas, in the case of a painting, or a CD in the case of a computer program or musical composition, for example. A copyright exists as soon as the expression is fixed in the tangible medium. However to enforce a copyright, the author must take the extra step of registering the copyright. Some examples of things that can be copyrighted include artwork, sculptures, novels, music, performance art, and software. Once an item is copyrighted, the author is granted exclusive rights for his / her life plus 70 years. Others are excluded from using the copyrighted item in any way, shape, or form without the permission of the author. If any infringement of those rights occurs, the author can bring a lawsuit to get actual or statutory damages for the unauthorized usage.
